Notes... Preaching series: The Gospel of Matthew When is the last time you studied and meditated on Matthew? Actually, it has been some time for me. I have, for the last few years, concentrated my Gospel work on John. I have come to know John as one of my professors. Matthew on the other hand has always intrigued me. Long before Matthew became a book it was a message about the saving work of Jesus Christ. Unlike the other Gospels, Matthew was written originally in Hebrew. This is significant as he bridges the gap between the Old and New Testaments. Like the rabbi who taught the Torah before him, the Gospel of Matthew is a teaching document. This Gospel can be applied to life in a practical manner. During the season of Pentecost we will undertake to wrestle, learn and be challenged by Matthew’s account of Jesus Christ. Against the background of growing opposition to Jewish Christians, Matthew boldly proclaims the kingdom of God has arrived in the person of Jesus. Matthew’s words are as powerful and profound to us today as they were to those first century Christians. We live in a world that is antagonistic and hostile as did those of Matthew’s day. Matthew will challenge our values as 21st century believers. He will comfort us reminding us Jesus is Lord and King of all. Finally, most importantly, Matthew will encourage us to believe that God has fulfilled the promises and expectations in the Old Testament. With the Apostle Peter we say, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” Pastor Mike |
